When it was released in 2008, the Subaru WRX STI Spec R was lauded for its level of refinement and noticeably smoother ride than its predecessors. But if you’re in the market for a standard STI Spec R then best look away now...

This particular example was purchased brand new and – upon joining the WRX Club and seeing what these cars were capable of when modified – the temptation for more power and quicker lap times quickly took over... to the point whereby this example became effectively a test car for MRT Performance in Sydney as they sought to extract as much horsepower as possible from the EJ25 boxer engine.

In standard form, the 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine put out 221kw of power and 407Nm of torque. Weighing in at 1515kg, the STI blasts from 0-100km/h in 5.2 seconds (0.2 seconds quicker than the previous model). But as we've mentioned, this car is far from standard.

With its dual-stage Ecutek map (the STI is setup for flex fuel), Invidia 3-inch exhaust and forged internals, power is up to 245kw at the wheels and 470Nm. To ensure the extra power is put to the ground, a Jim Berry clutch was installed, as well as a Whiteline anti-lift kit and adjustable control arms. Engine cooling is taken care of via a MRT top-mount intercooler and Mishimoto radiator, with Samco Sport silicone hoses throughout. The STI’s braking system has also been upgraded with DBA 5000 Series rotors upfront and 4000 Series on the rears. The factory BBS rims present in good condition and are wrapped in Zestino Gredge 07RS performance tyres.

Inside the car is all business. The driver’s side factory Recaro has been removed and in its place is a Sparco Evo seat with Takata five-point harness. A Bond bolt-in cage has been added for extra safety however the rear seats (and driver’s seat) are included with the sale should the new owner wish to reinstall them.

The odometer reads just on 130,000kms and the car will come with comprehensive service records and invoices relating to the extensive modifications. NSW registration has been paid until March 2025.

This is one seriously quick STI that is sure to put a huge smile on its new owner’s face.
